NOT SO GRIM

When the Grim Reaper’s child, Rei, befriends an accident-prone crow, he makes it his mission to keep the crow alive at all costs! But when the crow drowns, the only way that Rei thinks to save him is by refilling the crow’s ‘Hourglass of Life’ with dirt - instead of life-giving sand! However, when Grim catches Rei in the act, he has a slightly "grimmer" solution to Rei and Crow’s dilemma.

DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT

I’ve always been told everything I draw is cute, so when I was challenged to draw a cute Grim Reaper, the idea of this juxtaposed character soon became the beginnings of this film. The main question I asked was “What if the Grim Reaper was the father of an adoring son?” I played on this idea for a while but couldn’t find a story that focused solely on the relationship of the two without introducing an outside force, namely a third character. This is where the accident-prone crow came in and from there, the story flourished. I found that the crow, being seemingly suicidal, was a cute comparison to the Grim Reaper’s child who, rather than killing things, was instead trying to save it. The story plays with dark humour and is all about the unexpected, a loving Grim Reaper and his child resurrecting a suicidal crow. The quirky characters come together to create a story of love and friendship, no matter how grim they may be.
